Inna Volosevych has shared her observations on the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine:
The upcoming elections are among the most unpredictable in the history of Ukraine. As early as December we had as many as eight possible candidates for the 2nd round. In January, after Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he would run, and Sviatoslav Vakarchuk said he would not, the three leaders have already been identified: Zelensky, Tymoshenko and Poroshenko. I would highlight the following three peculiarities of these elections.
Firstly, the lowest ratings of the candidates: up to 2019, all candidates have received less than 15% of the votes of the total population. Volodymyr Zelensky is gaining somewhat more than 15% now, but before the previous presidential elections, the leaders had gained more than 20%.
Secondly, the leader of the rating is not a politician.
Thirdly, regional differences are diminished. The west is no longer the largest electorally active region, at least by the intentions to vote, it has been overtaken by Kyiv and the north. The east is the least active, as in the previous elections, but the south has already caught up with the center. Volodymyr Zelensky is the first leader of the presidential rating, who receives high level of support in all regions. At the same time, his electorate is the least confident in voting for their candidate as well as in participation in the elections. The voters of Petro Poroshenko are the most confident both in the candidate and in their participation in the elections, however, the voters of Yulia Tymoshenko are not far behind, therefore, it is difficult to predict who will be elected to the second round. Also, Petro Poroshenko has the most educated electorate, the electorate of Anatoliy Hrytsenko is in the second place. Oleg Liashko’s electorate is the least educated one, the electorates of Yuriy Boyko and Yulia Tymoshenko occupy the second place. Volodymyr Zelensky’s electorate is the youngest, while Yuriy Boyko has the oldest electorate.
